Just start the game with SteamVR open, press play on the main computer and put the headset that spawned on your nightstand on your head!

A nice game but I couldn't get any further than the grinder. I get the wheel to come down but the metal does not change wherever I put it.

Its unfortunately not very clear. Once the metal is in its final shape, you'll need to put it on the smithing table. This table gets activated when you select a sword or item to craft on your wrist UI. The items should snap to the table when it is activated.
